Music in Transparent Layers / Andrew Elaban / Zach Larabee

Milwaukee based musicians Rob Collier and Ben Aguilar mark Chase Public as one of the venues for their geographically explorational and context inclusive, evolutionary composition Music in Transparent Layers: Collier and Aguilar will record each performance as they tour the midwest and then play the recordings at each subsequent show as they add a new layer live. Thus, every performance is a unique stage in the development of the piece over the course of 11 evenings in 11 separate venues.

Joining the travellers, performances by local percussionist Zach Larabee and synthesizer Andrew Eleban.

Rob Collier - is a composer and performer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Recordings of Rob’s compositions have been released on Capstone Records, auralgamiSOUNDS, Unlabel, WM Recordings, and Greed Recordings. He has collaborated with filmmakers, choreographers, visual artists, producers, and performers in a wide variety of genres. Rob earned his DMA in Music Composition at the University of Maryland in 2010. He holds a BA from Bellarmine University and an MM from the University of Louisville. His composition teachers include Steve Rouse, Mark Wilson, and Richard Burchard. He teaches music theory at Alverno College in Milwaukee.

Zach Larabee - is a percussionist based in Cincinnati, Ohio. He performs both improvised and composed material in a variety of styles and genres. He received his Masters in Percussion from The University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music. In addition to his solo work, Larabee performs with the experimental sound trio “Knee Play” and the rock and roll bands “Sky Hank and Heady Weed” and “Blossom Hall.” Above all else, he believes that making music should be fun, and that everyone should get to define that for themselves.

Andrew Elaban - is a Cincinnati musician exploring texture and sound, and his preferred vehicle is a modular synthesizer.

Sober Sunday Song Series: Joy Ike & Brianna Kelly

Chase Public and Marisa Seremet present: The third of hopefully many installments of the Sunday Sober Song Series. This is a chance to disengage the enjoyment of live music from drinking culture. We hope that this can be an opportunity for sober, family-friendly fun and interaction with a music scene that is too often tipsy and exclusive. All ages encouraged! bring your children, bring your parents, bring your grandparents. Do not bring your beer or your booze. Bubbly Water? A-Okay.

This is a free concert, and nobody will be turned away! BUT- let’s consider this a challenge to prove to the world that we don’t need to rely on alcohol sales to support musicians. Make a donation, especially to support the incredible Joy Ike, who made the decision to intentionally eschew venues that are more likely to make financial guarantees in favor of a setting up a shows in more community focused spaces.

The lineup:

Joy Ike - Born to Nigerian immigrants, Joy Ike’s music, voice, and writing have drawn comparisons to female musicians such as Corinne Bailey Rae, Norah Jones, Laura Mvula, and Fiona Apple. But her percussive piano-playing and soaring vocals give homage to her African upbringing. Leaving her career as a publicist in 2008, Ike has since played thousands of shows across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest. She has had the opportunity to share the stage and open for Cody Chestnutt, Allen Toussaint, Tyrone Wells, and Najee to name a few. A write-up on NPR's All Things Considered says "The depth of subjects she tackles in her poetic lyrics are perfectly complemented by a unique blend of neo-soul, with just the right dash of pop...a truly compelling act to watch in person, with the ability to create an intimate setting in locations big and small."

Brianna Kelly - is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist living in Cincinnati, Ohio. Along with her solo music, she plays guitar and sings in various projects including indie dreamgaze band Soften and experimental pop ensemble A Delicate Motor.

“Her thick, echoing guitar wraps around her meditative voice like grass spreading across the roots of trees.” - Marc Masters, Bandcamp

In February 2018, Brianna released four new songs on a split cassette paired with Utah drone project Sympathy Pain on Cincinnati’s Whited Sepulchre Records.

Jeff Young and Paul Pinto, Patriots / Ben Sloan / yvette nepper

This is a good one. We are proud to present for you three unique and amazing performances, all under one bill.

Ben Sloan // is a Cincinnati-based percussionist, sound-maker, and educator with the MYCincinnati Youth Orchestra. In 2017 Ben completed the construction of the Percussion Park, a collection of colorful outdoor percussion instruments located in East Price Hill. He is currently playing with A Delicate Motor and was recently featured as The National's Homecoming Festival's 2018 Artist In Residence. In the past, Ben has performed with artists such as WHY?, The National, Lazy Heart, Elese Daniel, Napoleon Maddox, and Nate Brenner. Presently, Sloan is focused inward as he develops solo material in preparation for the PEOPLE Residency and Festival in Berlin later this summer. Ben finds little to no comfort writing bios, and thanks you if you've made it this far.

yvette nepper // lives and writes in the city she loves, Cincinnati, Ohio.

JEFF YOUNG AND PAUL PINTO, PATRIOTS, RUN FOR PUBLIC OFFICE ON A PLATFORM OF SWIFT AND RIGHTEOUS IMMIGRATION REFORM, LOTS OF JOBS, AND A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT: AN OPERA BY PAUL PINTO AND JEFFREY YOUNG // Created in 2011 as a parody of contemporary politics and politicians, this half-hour piece of music-theatre has become an all-too-real reflection of today's bad behavior surrounding issues of immigration and national identity. Young and Pinto collaboratively created the text, music, and staging, scoring the piece for their own voices, violin, percussion, a turntable, samples, and lots of cardboard boxes. In …Patriots…, instrumental music alternates with sung and spoken words, zany and humorous topical quips alternate with personal, pointed critiques of the political zeitgeist, fully notated sections merge into structured musical and textual improvisations, and tonal harmonies mix with startling, untraditional musical effects.

Concert: Drew Gowran / Nature Was Here / Neutrals

Drew Gowran (STL) - Drawing thickly resonant tones out of lids and bowls to create a monastic reverence within pure sound, the St. Louis-based percussionist elevates these utilitarian instruments to holy vessels.

https://drewgowran.bandcamp.com/album/dismantle-2

Nature Was Here (Cinci) - Highly expressionistic, shape-shifting guitar work that ranges from droning passages to mutated 12-bar blues from Joshua Kruer. Joshua's work highlights the old adage of Charlie Parker, "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn (guitar)"

https://naturewashere.bandcamp.com/

Neutrals (Dayton) - The Dayton, OH percussion duo of Evan Miler and Andrew Seivert have the uncanny ability to pull in sound from seemingly every surface and resonating body. Nothing seems out of place when everything is sound. The duo create improvised works out of studied composition that draw in electronics, percussion, vibraphone and found objects to create a sound bath that is difficult to get out of once you've settled in and made yourself comfortable.

Molly Sullivan - take a bath in it. Moving, touching, stirring Cincinnati Indie Rock. https://mollysullivan.bandcamp.com/

S/heep - bird nest material. A sweet queer cacophony of middle east and mid west.https://she-ep.bandcamp.com/releases

Ofir's Improv Orchestra & Choir Pop-up Show

Surprise!
Ofir Klemperer is coming to Cincinnati for a visit from Atlanta and is gathering the musicians of the CAC’s performance Signals for Immediate Music, for an improvised show.

With the musicians on stage, Ofir will guide the audience through their own vocal improvisation practices, providing an understanding of the improv conduction method and, importantly, an invitation to participate. Following the training, Ofir will then lead the musicians and audience on an improvised collaboration, crafting a conducted uproar to unite all in the room on a sonic journey to destinations unknown.

There is “what” we do, and there is also “why” we do it. This concert series highlights both. Play Your Heroes is a joint curation of David Corns and Chase Public that invites a group of individual musicians to each showcase two songs: one original, and one cover of a song which has been influential in their lives. Hosted at Chase Public, a non-commercial and distraction free venue, this series is an opportunity for musicians and audiences to share focused, dedicated moments. No loud conversations, no bar noise, nobody there who doesn’t want to listen.

While they're doing their thing, you're encouraged to do yours. Bring a notebook and a pen, take this opportunity to use the sounds as a creative prompt; write down what comes to you.

There will be a microphone at the front of the room, and when you have some words or thoughts that you like- you can share them; right there in the moment. No signups, no line, just an organic process of give and take, create and listen and share.

A Gentle Evening with Nancy Paraskevopoulos
Dec

7:00 PM19:00

A Gentle Evening with Nancy Paraskevopoulos

You are invited to join us for a gentle evening with musician and writer Nancy Paraskevopoulos.

What is A Gentle Evening? It’s a friendly gathering that highlights an artist as a person more than just a performer. The trajectory of the show is left entirely to them, focused on their choosing. It is a chance for artists and small audiences to interact in a casual, impactful way- divergent from the traditional expectations of performance. No two gentle evenings are the same, as they reflect the interests, perspective, and personality of those whom they honor. No openers, no bar sales, no cover charge, no distraction, no pressure.

“okay, yeah, cool… but what are we going to see?” - That’s a fair question. Maybe original music. Maybe original words. Maybe slideshow. Maybe group conversation. Maybe home movies. Maybe a favorite book. Maybe a favorite record. Maybe a manifesto. Maybe a charcuterie board. Maybe a woodworking project. Maybe a funny story. Maybe an act of sincere vulnerability. Maybe a little dance. Maybe an ascension into the ranks of the archangels. Short answer? No idea.

--

NANCY PARASKEVOPOULOS is a musician in the indie rock group Blossom Hall and the classic jazz Nancy Paraskevopoulos Trio. (It's pronounced Pa-ris-keh-VOP-oh-lis.)

Talkin' Music

7:00 PM19:00

Talkin' Music

Talkin’ Music is a performance exploring the sound of scripted words.

The idea.
Writers and actors know the rhythm and order in composed words. Media like cartoons, plays, and radio news reports are all written to be heard, but they hold such different music in them. What makes these sounds pleasing?
And what happens when these melodies are in the hands of musicians?

The prompt.
Our musicians have been tasked with the following:
1. Choose an audio clip of a person speaking written words.
2. Compose an original piece of music containing the melody and intonation of the speaking.

The musicians.
-Ashley Greathouse
-Zach Larabee
-Eva Patterson
-Deborah Clark Colón

Join us for an evening of spontaneity and new conversations at the first Talkin’ Music performance.

Talkin’ Music is brought to you by Cincinnati artist Gabrielle Lanza in partnership with Chase Public. You can see other projects of Gabrielle's at artofgala.com or @gala_art on Instagram.

Post-Xmas with LAZERQUEST, Ofir Klemperer, and Gingerbread Houses

Christmas Day 2016 will have decended into the great rolling shadow of the past - one among many relics of nostalgia captured in digital photographs and the trap of our individual and collective memory. Much of the food will have been eaten, many presents opened, and merry times had. But the finest carols, my friends, have waited to be sung. December 26th- Yule for all ears, a celebration of friends and fun.

LAZERQUEST - (Chris Reeves & Loraine Wible) Lazerquest's exegesis is Franco-American inspired dada dated future dance music cathexis. H&R Blockism vs. ontologicore. For parties only. This time? A Christmas party.

OFIR KLEMPERER - (b. 1982, Haifa, Israel) currently lives in Cincinnati OH and is a composer, improviser, singer/song writer, and producer. He received his M.Mus. from the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague, The Netherlands. Leaning heavily on his Korg MS-20, Ofir writes melodic lines, and orchestrates classical instruments together with punk and electronics, applying pop oriented music into an experimental and noise approach. Today though? Christmas songs.

GINGERBREAD HOUSE ARCHITECTURAL AWARDS CEREMONY - Bring a gingerbread house and submit it for judgment. There are basically no rules for this, and the judgment will be completely subjective. Interested in hosting a get together where you and your friends can build gingerbread constructions? please do that. All entries will be considered, and will be subject to massive scrutiny by the surprise guest judge.
