The Breath of the Compassionate - Movement Meditation with Mary Chase Doll

  • Chase Public 2868 Colerain Avenue Cincinnati, OH, 45225 United States (map)

Far too often we find ourselves sitting still.  Join us for an opportunity to change that:

The Breath of the Compassionate Movement Meditation developed by educator and movement artist Mary Chase Doll premiered in New York City at The Laban Institute in June of 2018. This work is meant to be shared with others to cultivate compassion for others (and for ourselves) in our world that rampantly turns to aggression and defense. The rhetoric and scholarship that inspired the work comes from Karen Armstrong and The Charter for Compassion. The visual and musical compositions were graciously gifted by the composer Bill Alves.  The Breath of the Compassionate  Movement Meditation is for everyone, no matter your movement background, spiritual practice, or affiliation.

The practice of the meditation is a triptych: self (or group) movement, mantra, and external representations of the sacred geometric eight pointed star in visual and sound imagery. You are invited to engage in one or all as you are able.

Join us at Chase Public to Engage with The Breath of the Compassionate Movement Meditation by observing a performance of the movement, sound and video tessellations. Then interact with its’ creator Mary Chase Doll through reflection and discussion on the history, creation and potential impact the work can have for your community.

Mary moves. Her life as an artist constantly shifts with each new State and Country she and her family lives in.  Over the last eighteen years Mary has had the pleasure of working with people from all over the world not only through the sacred power of dance and its abundant connections and opportunities but by the sheer happenstance of being a wife of a US Foreign Area Officer.  Our latest move was to Tampa, FL where Mary is teaching at The University of Tampa. 9 moves in 18 years.

Mary is a Certified Laban Movement Analyst and Bartenieff Fundamentals Practitioner. Mary focuses on braiding tradition and innovation through teaching, choreography and performance. She has extensive experience as an educator and director holding positions in public schools, private academies and universities.  In addition to teaching at The University of Tampa she has held positions at Kansas State University, The University of Texas at Austin, and Austin Peay State University. Her work has been performed and produced in 16 States and internationally in Austria, Greece, Guatemala, Bali, and Scotland.  She holds a B.F.A. in dance choreography and performance from the University of Illinois and an M.F.A. in Dance from the University of Texas at Austin.

In February her students at The University of Tampa performed the premiere of Aurora that will be combined with the work Heavy the Rise that continues to be performed having premiered last fall, most recently was featured in the GASP! festival at the Tampa Art Museum. These works will combine to create an new evening length piece in the future. At the end of  May, Mary performed as Isadora Duncan in the Yesenin Poetry Show, a Russian arts showcase. In June, after five years of research and process, The Breath of the Compassionate premiered at the Laban Institute in New York City. This is a movement meditation performed in collaboration with composer Bill Alves’ gamelan and video tessellations. This work follows the philosophy and work of the Charter for Compassion and will continue to be be performed and offered as workshops in the coming months.
