A Dance Between Dana Franklin and Millie-Christine:

Choreography illustrated, played and made alive by:
Napoleon Maddox - poetry, vocals & sound collage
Eddy Kwon - violin
Mike Fleisch - live illustration

This performance will merge the real lives of Millie-Christine McKoy (subjects of Napoleon Maddox's Feb 22 -24, CAC show Twice the First Time) with Octavia Butler's science fiction character, Dana, from the novel ‘Kindred.’ This is one of a series of works in progress. Maddox looks at multiple ways to rediscover and draw strength from the story of his great-grand aunts, Millie-Christine. With this performance he summons them in the way a character in peril called for Dana to cross space in time to save his life.

About Millie-Christine McKoy // Born into slavery in 1851, conjoined twins Millie-Christine lived an extraordinary life jumping between autonomy and captivity, emancipation and exploitation. While Millie-Christine were inspected and labeled sideshow freaks, they defiantly self-identified as "beautifully and wonderfully made.”

About Dana Franklin from ‘Kindred’ // A courageous, compassionate, and independent African-American woman writer who celebrates her twenty-sixth birthday in 1976. She is the protagonist and the narrator of the story. She is forced to travel through time and space to a slave plantation in antebellum Maryland. On the plantation, she must learn to make hard compromises to survive as a slave and to ensure her existence in her own time
